on hazardous materials
How can private companies contribute to public safety by automatically sharing their information regarding transport and storage of hazardous materials? When sufficiently incentivized, these companies could highly contribute to a truly dynamic and even live risk profile of regions, cities and smaller areas.
This dynamic profile could contribute massively to preventing or containing major disasters, as rescuers know where all hazardous materials (close to) the epicentre of the disaster are.
The Dutch Public Safety Consortium challenged the teams to develop a prototype/Proof of Concept that can be developed further in changing coalitions. This way, the would like to stimulate lasting and natural innovation in the safety domain.
Incentivizing transport companies to share data on hazardous materials
The Fire Service does not have real-time information about hazardous materials around any public incident (fire, disaster, and so on) to take preventive actions, as transport companies do not share information of real-time location and payload of their vehicles that transport hazardous materials.
Edgica’s Safety as a Value solution collects real-time data of GPS coordinates and data from smart sensors installed on a vehicle, and saves it to IOTA in encrypted form. It awards the Transport Company with Safety Tokens (ERC20) for sharing that valuable data with the system, and the Fire Service. The solution is a bridge between the Fire Service Control Room and the dispatcher of a transport company. It only takes basic non-sensitive data and secures it.
The transport company is incentivized further by the transparent nature of our solution: the blockchain platform can be a trusted registry of companies who care about social responsibility. Being more transparent could lower the insurance fees of companies, which is another way of funding the tokens companies are rewarded with.
The solution uses IOTA to store data from the IOT devices in encrypted form via Masked Authenticated Messaging, which is designed to store data directly from the IoT devices. The unchangeable and encrypted log of records in IOTA can be used for a) investigations and arbitrage in case of claims, and b) as a source of big data for AI tasks.
The solution uses the ERC20 token and smart contract in Ethereum to incentivize and power interaction between the Transport Company and Fire Service.
